Board Assessment
A board or similar governing body of leaders plays a critical leadership role in any company.
How well a board exercises good governance and operates will always have a notable impact on a company’s performance, reputation, and overall growth and success.
Determining what board members are already doing well and identifying their areas of potential improvement is imperative. It demonstrates to customers, staff, and all other stakeholders that the company takes leadership, governance roles, and responsibilities seriously.
Your Say is well-positioned to support company boards.
With more than 20 years of collective knowledge and experience in helping companies through consulting and analytical surveys that can effect meaningful change, we know how to help all levels of business improve their efforts through measured and informed steps.
What is the ‘Your Say’ Board Assessment?
Our board assessment has been designed to focus on companies that have established boards or several leadership positions that govern the direction of the business.
It is an easy-to-use online assessment and diagnostic application that enables each member of a company board (and senior management, if applicable) to provide feedback about the board’s collective performance.
When all board members have completed the assessment, our application then sorts, analyses, and produces accurate and insightful reports. This information is collated and a consultant from the Your Say team will then present the findings to the board.

Focus Areas of the Board Assessment
There are eight focus areas that are included in the board assessment. Each member will be asked to provide feedback and insights into their thoughts on the following:
Board structure and membership
Board meetings
Planning processes
Monitoring and evaluation processes
Board and CEO relationships
Policy-making and risk-management practices
Financial management processes
External relations practices

Frequently Ask Questions
01 What is a board assessment and why is it needed?
A board assessment survey is a critical component of assessing the performance, governance, and overall effectiveness of a company’s board or leadership who govern the direction of a business. Just like any other level of a business’s operations, ensuring board members are handling operations that drive success and overall workplace satisfaction is key.
Â
A board that builds on its strengths and amends its weaknesses showcases to employees, customers and clients, stakeholders, and the broader public that it takes its responsibilities and operations seriously. But, most importantly, being able to implement tangible improvements to their governance and leadership can inspire greater success for the organisation at large.
02How does a board assessment review work?
As boards or other governing bodies require members to be on the same page – or, at least, moving towards the same core objectives – a board assessment survey is completed by members of the board themselves. In certain cases, a board assessment survey may also involve the participation of the CEO and/or senior management who engage with the board on a more regular basis.
Â
The core focus of the assessment is to gauge how different governing members of the board perceive their current efficiencies and where friction exists. Questions covered within the survey seek to identify where these perceived efficiencies and points of friction are so that members of the board can then address the most pertinent areas of improvement.
Â
Consistent and high-quality governance is essential to a company’s ongoing success, making board assessment reviews an absolute necessity.
03What tools are used for board assessment surveys?
If you’re looking to conduct a board assessment survey for your company, Your Say is here to help. We established our services to help businesses conduct affordable and insightful surveys that can drive actionable change and improvements both in the short- and long-term. Not only does this benefit the efficiency and focus of your business’s operations and higher-level governance, but its culture, consumer relationships, and overall employee engagement and retention.
Â
When you engage with Your Say, you can tell us what you want covered in your board assessment survey and we’ll also provide you with guidance and suggestions of our own. Once you’re happy with the survey’s structure, we’ll handle the project onboarding and make any necessary adjustments before launching the survey for your company.Â
Â
Board members and senior management (if desired) will be provided with a link to access the survey, and they can provide their feedback with confidence knowing that their responses will be completely anonymous.
Â
We’ll then analyse the survey findings and put all the results into a digestible report that enables you to implement meaningful changes and improvements that result in a refined and freshly focused board experience for all.
04How often should a board conduct an assessment?
The frequency with which you undertake a board assessment review can differ depending on the size of the board and company, but a good general benchmark is to conduct one assessment survey per year.Â
Â
This could be done towards the beginning or end of a standard year (in other words, in November/December or January/February) or it could be conducted at the beginning of a new financial year (around July or August).
Â
Yearly assessments are a great solution as they give you the breathing room to implement changes and improvements informed by a board assessment survey. By the time your next yearly assessment rolls around, you’ll have a better picture of the improvements you were able to make and where work is still needed.
Â
Outside of a yearly cadence, it can also be a good idea to conduct a survey if there are any changes to your board, such as if one member retires and is replaced by a new member. Conducting an assessment survey early into a member change can help you all stay on task.

Â

- Policy-making and risk management practices
- Planning processes
- Financial management processes
